About this event
A Filmed Theater Production of Mrs. Warren’s Profession by George Bernard Shaw. See a London play in the comfort of the Avalon Movie Theater in DC. Five-time Olivier Award winner Imelda Staunton (The Crown) joins forces with her real-life daughter Bessie Carter (Bridgerton) for the very first time, playing mother and daughter in Bernard Shaw’s incendiary moral classic. The subject matter—prostitution and sex work—was so controversial that Shaw didn’t publish his play until five years after he had written. It was not performed until nine years after that.
Vivie Warren is a privileged Cambridge-educated woman ahead of her time. Her mother, however, is a product of that old patriarchal order. Exploiting it has earned Mrs. Warren a fortune – but at what cost to her, to her daughter, and to women? And why did she choose the profession she did?
Filmed live from the West End, this new production explores the clash between morality and independence, traditions and progress, and how women exercise power in society.
NOTE: People who join in BHV’s Movie Group typically go to lunch together in the area after the film so we can talk about what we saw. We also typically carpool to and from the theater. If you want to see this film, send Caryn McTighe Musil a note at cmusil@outlook.com. Let her also know if you need a ride or are willing to drive others.
